If you have a supermarket on the pier I really don't expect to shop in town anymore. The traffic congestion that will ensue will block up the town centre and make it unusable. We currently shop out-of-town for supermarket-type shopping but come to the town centre for all of our speciality needs. We have a wonderful fish shop, a superb butcher, a friendly greengrocer, an abundance of great gift shops and many other wonderful small retail outlets. We will continue to patronise these local businesses while the town centre is still a pleasure to visit. When it becomes completely congested with traffic bottlenecking towards the pier, we will give up altogether and go elsewhere for everything. Please, local retailers - trust in the high quality of your goods and services to retain local custom and pull new custom from out-of-towners who come for Waitrose and stay for you.
