Alternative supermarket site?

The Helensburgh Retailers Alliance has submitted plans to the council for an alternative town centre site for a supermarket in a bid to halt plans for an edge of town development.

Very clever, where's the fuel station, where's the parking, where is the disabled parking and facilities. Unless either Tesco or one / two of the other larger fronted shops moves out this is a non starter. The town centre would almost shut down during the construction, Hoods trucks have enough problems entering the site as it is, some of the trucks supplying materials for the construction would be twice the size. This would kill the town centre quicker than any imagined threat from Waitrose. There was enough problems during the re-vamping of the water and sewage systems. Just think for 12 months Tesco gone, Smiths gone, 40 ft lorries delivering steel girders and sheeting. Think of all that dust covering Joe Callaghans meat and delli.

This is simply a stalling tactic - it is not a practical solution at all. Retailers, have faith in your goods and services. People will always come for good service and high quality products where there is sufficient space for driving and parking in the town. If the town becomes congested with the traffic created by a large supermarket in the town centre, I will certainly be prepared, albeit with much regret, to forfeit my rewarding and pleasant in town shopping.
