There has been widespread disappointment over plans to go ahead with the closure of the Clyde Coastguard station. While a U-turn by the UK government will keep Shetland and Stornoway coastguard open, local sailors, MSPs and union officials have expressed dismay that the Clyde station will shut sometime between two thousand twelve and two thousand and fifteen, with the loss of thirty one jobs. Start Atkinson, a PCS Union official said the initial reaction is one of shock and that the government have not listened to what people had been saying. He said that while coastguards in Belfast and Stornoway will now look after this area, local knowledge is essential, especially when the west coast has some of the toughest coastline in Scotland.

New research has shown a healthy body really does keep a healthy mind. Results of an international scientific study released this week, found that in addition to helping combat heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses, regular exercise and a good diet could be a key to avoiding dementia in later life. And while today’s generation can expect to live an average of twenty years longer than their grandparents, the battle to stay fit and healthy for those extra years needs to start now – especially as the latest government figures show sixty percent of men and fifty two percent of women in the UK are overweight or obese. We spoke to personal trainer Chris Bowman about the importance of exercise….
