Helensburgh and Lomond News for Thursday 18th of August.

Residents and retailers have given a resounding welcome to the announcement that Argyll and Bute Council has reached an agreement with Luss Estates to allow development of the pier head site. As we revealed in yesterday’s bulletin the council has secured the site for the building of a leisure and retail park to help regenerate the centre of the town. The move has created debate over the future of the proposed out-of-town Waitrose development opposite the new Hermitage academy as the pier could offer an alternative town centre location for a supermarket. We went out into the town to find out what people think…..

I am shocked and saddened that people are considering building a supermarket on what is potentially the most attractive part of Helensburgh and a fantastic tourist attraction. At first I thought this was a joke. If we need a supermarket or more shops, so be it, but put them elsewhere. Please.

I hope Waitrose, Sainsberry's or Marks open in Helensburgh as we need a good supermarket

S. Smith - Wednesday 24th August 8:28pm

Big retailers meeting in the town tonight, apparently Waitrose developers are really upset that a new site has been opened up in the centre of the town after waitrose have done so much to get everyone excited about the out of town site. Obviously Waitrose weren't aware of the possibility of the centre being available.
